Selected Colloquium 7: Re-Evaluating 'Older' Drugs for the Treatment of Mood Disorders; a Focus on MAOI's, Lithium and Psychedelics
Overall Abstract Details The treatment of mood disorders is limited by our relative lack of effective treatment options and further therapeutic options are needed. In this exciting symposium we will revisit the use of 'older' drugs for the treatment of mood disorders and reflect on whether the time has come to re-evaluate their use. Dr Paul Stokes (King's College London) will present the results of his recently completed network meta-analysis that has investigated the efficacy, tolerability and acceptability of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI's) for the treatment of mood disorders, including bipolar disorders. Professor Allan Young (King’s College London) will present recently completed work on the use of psilocybin for the treatment of mood disorders and related psychiatric conditions. The putative mechanism of action of psychedelics and the need for future studies will be discussed. Finally, Professor Janusz K. Rybakowski (Poznan University of Medical Sciences) will review lithium therapy: from the first Melbourne researchers to the current best practice nowadays.
Overall, we hope that this symposium will provide an exciting cutting-edge update and re-evaluation about the use of these 'older' drugs for the treatment of mood disorders.
