Symposium 3: Update on the Clinical Utility of PsychoPharmacogenetics
Pharmacogenetics factors can, among other things, lead to differences in the activity of enzymes that metabolize drugs1. Studies in psychiatric patients show that genotyping of drug-metabolizing enzymes can increase treatment efficacy and decrease side effect burden, which could benefit millions of patients worldwide and help reduce cost of care1,2. Prominent industry independent groups, such as the Dutch Pharmacogenetics Working Group (DPWG, Netherlands)2,3 and the Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium (CPIC, USA)4 have developed dosing guidelines based on published pharmacogenetic research of gene-drug pairs (e.g., clinical utility comparator trials and pharmacokinetic association studies)5,6 for over 30 commonly used psychotropics used in the treatment of diverse psychiatric disorders.
